In preparation for the Performance-Based Research Fund (PBRF) Quality Evaluation 2025, the TEC is seeking nominations for roles within the Moderation team.

The Moderation team is responsible for ensuring consistency across assessments and panels, which is key to providing confidence in the results of the Quality Evaluation. The Moderators work closely with the TEC to appoint Panel Chairs, initial Panellists, and support the drafting of Panel Specific Guidance. They also work with our Sector Reference Group to help finalise the Guidelines.

The Moderation team for Quality Evaluation 2025 will include a Co-Moderator, a Co-Moderator – Māori, and a Deputy Moderator – Pacific.

The Moderation team will be appointed from mid-2022 to mid-2026, when we will publish the results of the Quality Evaluation.

Nomination forms can be sent to PBRF.Help@tec.govt.nz by 5pm on 15 July 2022.

About the PBRF

The purpose of the Performance-Based Research Fund (PBRF) is to ensure that excellent research in the tertiary education sector is encouraged and rewarded.  This means assessing the research performance of tertiary education organisations (TEOs) and then funding them on the basis of their performance.

The Quality Evaluation is an assessment of the research performance of staff at eligible TEOs. TEOs present their staff members' research in Evidence Portfolios that are assessed for quality by expert peer review panels.  The results set the allocations for 55 percent of the $315 million a year fund.

The Quality Evaluation is held periodically. The most recent Quality Evaluation was held in 2018 and the next one will be held in 2025. There have been four previous Quality Evaluation rounds in 2003, 2006, 2012, and 2018.
