Budget 2016 includes an investment of $256.5 million in tertiary education over four years.
The ‘tertiary education package’ focuses on making sure that the tertiary education system helps New Zealanders. It’s important that people have the opportunity to develop the skills they need to thrive in a successful and innovative country.
Through Budget 2016, the Government is investing $486 million over four years in science and innovation as well as tertiary education initiatives - in an ‘Innovative New Zealand’ package. This package will help create a more diversified high-wage economy while encouraging investment and growth through regional development initiatives.
The Government continues to focus investment on areas that are experiencing high employer demand. We need more skilled people in disciplines like science, engineering, and agriculture to keep our economy growing.
