The Government has confirmed responsibilities for ministers covering the tertiary sector.

Hon Penny Simmonds is Minister for Vocational Education. Her responsibilities include vocational education and Te Pūkenga, Workforce Development Councils (and their successor entities), foundation and community education, careers and tertiary education funding. Minister Simmonds is the minster responsible for the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) and we will continue to work closely with her office.
Hon Shane Reti is Minister for Universities. In addition to responsibility for Universities, Minister Reti will take on responsibility for the Code of Pastoral Care, student support, fees free, fee regulation and Wānanga. Minister Reti has other portfolios outside the education area, and his Science and Technology portfolio has useful connections and alignment with his education responsibilities. The TEC will support Minister Reti and his office with his education responsibilities.
Minister Stanford, Minister for Education, has responsibility for international education, including Education New Zealand (ENZ), and retains overall responsibility for the Ministry of Education and for the Education and Training Act 2020.
Minister Upston, Minister for Social Development and Employment, and Minister Stanford also have responsibilities supporting Minister Simmonds with careers, and foundation and community education.
