The Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) is pleased to confirm that consultation on the Workforce Development Council’s (WDCs) Order in Council proposals will start on 16 December and run for 7.5 weeks to 5 February 2021. 

Orders in Council are required to give formal effect to each WDC enabling them to be established. 

Consultation on these proposals will be an opportunity for industry, and others interested in WDCs, and vocational education and training from an industry and employer perspective, to have a say and participate in the whakahokia kōrero on each WDC’s proposed name; the industry coverage; and governance arrangements.

The six interim Establishment Boards, with support from TEC, led significant engagement with industry, peak bodies, and Māori, to develop the their six proposals. This is complex work and it has been important to ensure wide engagement was undertaken in the development of the proposals so that they are fit for purpose.

Consulting before the end of the year will progress plans to establish the WDCs in the first half of 2021, and from that point the first WDC Boards will form their organisations into fully operational WDCs.

This is one of the most significant changes being undertaken as part of the Reform of Vocational Education (RoVE) and the TEC wants to acknowledge the work of the interim Establishment Boards to develop these proposals.
