About the TEC

The Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) Te Amorangi Matauranga Matua is responsible for leading the government's relationship with the tertiary education sector, and for policy development and implementation.

We are responsible for funding the government’s contribution to tertiary education and training offered by universities, institutes of technology and polytechnics, wananga, private training establishments, industry training organisations, adult and community education providers and other tertiary education providers.

We support tertiary education organisations to be accountable, self-improving and self-managing.

All forms of post-secondary school education and training come under the TEC's umbrella. These range from foundation literacy and numeracy education to full-time academic study; Modern Apprenticeships and work-related training right through to doctoral research and development.

Government’s priorities for tertiary education are:

  • a high-trust and high-quality tertiary funding environment
  • all students leaving the education system with worthwhile qualifications
  • an appropriately trained and competent workforce.

In order to meet Government’s expectations, we have established priorities which are laid out in the Statement of Intent.

Working with other agencies is vital to achieving the Government’s education priorities. Key Government agencies include the Ministry of Education, the New Zealand Qualifications Authority, the Ministry of Research, Science and Technology, the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology, the Ministry of Economic Development, the Department of Labour and the Ministry of Social Development. We also engage with a range of private, education sector and industry representative groups.
